In true Cure fashion, they created the masterful pop track, “Love Song” way back in ‘89. Fast forward approximately 15 years later (’04) and the once adored 311 decided to try their hand at the same song. Whenever a band decides to cover a song, the only thing that I ask for is the group put their original spin on the cut. And in my opinion, 311 put their reggae influence all over the track in a laid back, grab your beer and lay by the beach way.
311’s cut randomly popped up on the iPod a few days ago, and I quickly hit repeat. Try them both if you’ve yet to experience either. Recommended.
Cover songs can go one way or the other with me. This, as you mentioned in your post, works with 311 putting their own, funky influence on the track. It’s memorable enough to give it multiple listens, but it also gives me an urge to hear the original for comparison purposes. Fantastic song. Great cover. I miss 311.
