My intentions were for January to be a month I try and ignore new music. I still needed this month to try and enjoy those neglected releases from last year that didn’t deserve to be shunned. Whatever; that shit ain’t possible. This mixtape/record was the first thing I’ve heard in 2008 and also the first Michael Jackson dedication album as well. A what?
Chicago’s Rhymefest and NYC’s Mark Ronson have put together a 24 track mixtape that has sampled the king of pop’s music, voice, and hilarity in what they’re calling “Man in the Mirror”. Rhymefest can spit and Ronson can lay down hot beats, which are very apparent here, but the two of them also create some of the best skits to hit a hip-hop record in awhile. Sounds odd, right? All the skits sample Mike’s voice and are built around his crazy banter. Besides some hot tracks and something to at least make you crack a smile, Ghostface, Talib Kweli, Wale, and numerous others guest on this dedication record. Recommended for any fan of MJ and anyone in a hip-hop rut.
Below is a skit and then a track with a Jackson 5 backing.
