Days Are Long

Winter Warmth

The first two to three months of the year are typically the most depressing for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere.  The holidays have passed, leaving behind a trail of debt and darkness in its wake.  Here in Chicago, winter seems to drag on longer each year.  Or perhaps it just feels that way this year because the season has been a little more brutal than usual.  Whichever the case, it has me longing for warmer weather and longer days.

This song, written and performed by Herman Jolly, is called “Days Are Long.”  His vocals are delicate yet forthright while he tries to find a safe haven during a particularly exhausting day.  The steady acoustic rhythm sheds a cold tone throughout.

The song has kept me company on my walks with the dog lately.  There have been nights experienced where the wind literally whips through any layer I wear.  And as I look up at the clear sky and see the moon shining bright in the midst of my breath, I often wonder when the sun will shine for just a little while longer.   The first step will be made on Sunday as we change our clocks ahead.  Hopefully the weather will follow suit.

Damn, Jason brings the philosophical. I have found the last three months depressing, although only recently did I wonder if the weather was a factor–when it was 74 on Saturday and I opened up my windows, played music, and posted 4 times (got no real work done though!). Alas, it snowed more than 5 inches Sunday and it’s snowing right now. I’m looking forward to visiting my family this weekend in warmer climates and returning refreshed and ready to get back to the grind.

The song….MiS great, as usual. We’ve been bringing it of late (Colin demanding Moving in Stereo radio/podcast), although I expect this song to be featured in some major indie movie next month and for us to explode more…or you. Is this from an album? It sounds like it might be my motto for the next 5 months, if I have some good news come my way anytime soon………(glory?)

I was hoping for the real Huey with that link! I discovered some pictures of him last night on my camera I forgot about…they’re awesome.

What did you think of the Flobots song I recently posted? Damn, I dig it.

Glad you like the song. It very definitely could be about long, exhausting days in the summer (literally when days are long), but the melancholic tone of the music really draws me in during these figid nights of late.

I apologize for not dedicating more space to Herman Jolly’s background. I typically do, though last night I decided to stick with a depressing theme for some reason.

Anyway, Herman Jolly has been around since the early ’90’s. He picked up some acclaim (especially in the Northwest…where he’s from) while fronting a band called Sunset Valley. The members went their separate ways after a while, and Jolly continued to write and record. He released a couple solo albums as a result. “Days Are Long” is featured on his album released last year called Bunker Life.

Recently, he’s been dedicating his time to a new band called Little Pieces. Through his various identities, he draws inspiration from the Pixies, Big Star, Elvis Costello, and Robyn Hithcock.

Side Note: I added a real picture of Huey.
