Never underestimate the one-man jam. Jonathon Bates, out of you guessed it, Los Angeles, has talent. The man, under the Mellowdrone moniker, put out one of my favorite EPs ever in 2003 – which was due mainly to “Fashionably Uninvited”. With it’s back & forth melodies, Buckley-like delivery, and explosive peaks and valleys – but the man has gotten little exposure ’round these parts. I stumbled upon Mellowdrone thanks to CMJ – where they pegged him as a Self, meets Depeche Mode, meets Jeff Buckley vibe. Maybe better than this R.I.Y.L? Bates, after another EP, finally dropped a full length in ’06. And it looks like he’s been cookin’ up a little something else for our aural pleasure…
