Radio Friendly Unit Shifter

Rolling Stone :: NirvanaRolling Stone :: Beck

Nostalgia comes in many forms.  I’ve often thought my love for music is entrenched in a belief that any familiar  song at any given time can instantaneously shuttle me back to a time/place/event wherein I first listened to said song.  These moments equally trigger all kinds of emotion for obvious reasons.  Mindless formative relationships.  Countless hours playing home run derby on a summer day.  The death of a close one.  Regardless of the setting, a soundtrack was likely formed during any of those situations.

The 1990s brought forth a copious amount of change in my life.  I started the decade in 8th Grade at 13 years old.  I ended it as a college grad with a full time job at 22.  Throughout my teens and early twenties, I began to entrench myself in music with each passing year.  Throwaway dance tracks like “Speed Racer” and “Dangerous On the Dancefloor” were discovered on Z95 and B96.  West Coast Gangsta Rap anchored by Dr. Dre and Snoop Doggy Dogg followed closely behind.  Next up: Grunge & Alternative, complete with scratchy guitar feedback and angst-ridden lyrics.  The decade seemingly ended with all those genres combined; a melting pot of beats, clicks, samples and instrumentation.

This is the way I remember the decade.  And perhaps that evolution is a reflection of my own maturation from a boy to a young man.  Sorry for the digression.

Here we have the second installment of a ’90s-influenced mix created by NYC scensters Nick Catchdubs and Mr. Ducker called Radio Friendly Unit Shifter, Volume 2.  Although Nirvana is prominently represented in both mixes, the title track does not make an appearance oddly enough.   In any case, many fine songs (mostly rock) are documented in various lengths within the 36-track sequence.  Ducker aptly describes the mix like this:

From Seattle fuzz to Judgement Night gems, we present all the angst and nonsense of the alternative nation as seamlessly mixed party music, with plenty of movie samples and in-jokes thrown in for good measure.

So start the weekend with a little ’90s era Q101 nostalgia, huh?  Download the zip here.  Complete tracklisting after the j-u-m-p. Continue reading ‘Radio Friendly Unit Shifter’

So You Think You Can Dance?

So You Think You Can Dance

A lot of attention here has focused on the brilliance behind the one man band.  True geniuses in their own right to be sure.  However, respect should be paid to those that dance all by their lonesome at a venue of their choice.  We’ve all witnessed or executed a similar circumstance; whether it’s 1/3 of Bell Biv DeVoe jumping on stage in between sets at a Soulwax concert, or busting your two-step with Mr. Gillis next to his laptop.  It never fails to entertain.

Fresh from the Sasquatch Music Festival in Washington a couple weeks ago, a video has surfaced of a happy-go-lucky fan who clearly enjoys the shit out of Santigold’s “Unstoppable.”

Would you join him?  Or would you sit idle in the crowd?  He surely makes a convincing case for the former.  Take note, fellas.  I expect to see similar moves constructed at Monolith later on this summer.

The Future of Music Distribution?

Pearl Jam

A major music industry announcement was made earlier today with regard to future releases.  Pearl Jam, arguably one of the most popular and influential acts in the 1990s and beyond, confirmed through their long-time manager, Kelly Curtis, on Billboard today, that their forthcoming album will be released

without a U.S. label, but a consortium of partners including Target, as the big box retail partner. . .[while] deals [are] also finished or in the works with an online retailer, a mobile partner, a gaming company and with a network or possibly networks of indie retail stores.

While much of the attention is being placed on whether a band so strongly entrenched in their beliefs against corporate exposure and influence has finally ‘sold out’ by signing an exclusive agreement with Target, could this be viewed as a new distribution model for music consumerism?  In other words, is this a no-choice attempt to sell albums or simply a way of truly releasing independent music?  Please discuss.

In other news, the band will be debuting a song on The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien this evening.  A brand new song on a brand new show.  Coincidence?

Lost Angeles Needs an A Capella

WAW
A Capella; a time honored tradition university-wide across the United States and beyond.  The bare-bones format has had a recent resurgence with the unexpected popularity of a Christmas album issued by Indiana University group Straight No Chaser last winter, along with the Ben Folds tribute released in April.

Off the Beat, a self-described modern rock co-ed a capella group from the University of Pennsylvania have thrown a hat in the indie ring with their take on Lost Angeles by Wired All Wrong.  Step to the blurry video below…

Pretty & Nice Get Young With Infectious Pop

Pretty & Nice

As we approach the eve of an imminent departure, I find it fitting to have stumbled upon this band from Boston, MA.  They call themselves Pretty & Nice and sound eerily similar to the reason this site exists in the first place.  The group is the brainchild of one guy, Holden Lewis, who recruited someone to help produce and EP’s worth of material.  The two toured the land before adding a drummer to cement the trio.

A collection of remixes of songs featured on the EP caught the attention of the Sub Pop subsidiary, Hardly Art.  The band spent the next year recording their debut album, Get Young, in their newly assembled basement studio.  It dropped in October and features endlessly contagious pop falsetto hooks and harmonies reminiscent to the exuberance of  XTC and Devo .  “Tora, Tora, Tora” is the first single and sounds like OK Go with a driving punch. But the song that caught my attention, however, is “Piranha” – a track that could easily be mistaken for the one man jam himself.

Celebrate tax day with Pretty & Nice at the Empty Bottle on Wednesday.  One last show perhaps, dude?  If not, they’ll be around your new digs on Sunday at the Hi-Dive.

Dent May :: Daytrotter Session

Dent May

While making the rounds through much of the country recently, Dent May took time to graciously pay a visit to The Horseshack in Rock Island, Illinois for a Daytrotter Session.  May crooned through four songs with his infamous ukulele.  Three of the songs also appear on his full length album, which you can purchase here if you don’t already own it.

Catch him on stage if you can.  I hear (from a couple of MiS contributors) he puts on quite a show.  He’s trekking through Europe for the better part of April before embarking on another tour of the U.S. in May.

One (Wo)man Jam Part II

t-andersson-loop-pedals4

Credit must be given when credit is due.  The other day, I was passed a link from a friend who respectfully introduced me to the best saki bomb Chicago has to offer.  I haphazardly clicked the link at the end of the work day and listened while I gathered my things.  I was quickly hooked when I looked up at the screen to see these unbelievable sounds being created by one person. A female version of the one man jam?

Theresa Andersson was born in Sweden but moved to New Orleans at age 18 in 1990.  Primarily a skilled violinist, Andersson bounced around as a session/touring musician with local southern U.S. bands before recording her first solo album in 1994.  She began to experiment with various instruments, and in the process, discovered the magic of working with loop pedals as a way to play each instrument in a given recording by herself.  The result captures an unending talent of musicianship and showmanship as she strums, drums, claps, and sings her way through a song with the tap of her foot to a pedal.

After having met fellow Swedish artist Tobias Froberg, Andersson sent him a video demo she recorded in the kitchen of her house.  Froberg was so taken with what he heard, he flew to the U.S. and encouraged her to record the full length with the same set up – in the comforts of her kitchen.  The demos found their way onto youtube last year where Theresa Andersson became somewhat of an overnight internet sensation.

These songs are featured on her most recent album, Hummingbird Go! Although she was forced to move out of Louisiana and into Texas as a result of Hurricane Katrina, the LP is a direct reflection of the influence brought forth from living in New Orleans.  It’s easy to get lost in the magic that’s created when one person is responsible for each instrument heard on a recording, especially in a live setting.  But, perhaps ironically,  the instrument that truly rises above all others is her voice.  She multitasks with it as she does with the other instruments, whether keeping a beat or harmonizing.  But she also let’s it fly on occasion, sounding like a cardinal overheard at dawn on an early morning walk in the spring.  Did I just write that?  My apologies for any douche-chills induced…

Catch her on the road, if you can, where she stays true to her talents and performs by herself just as she does in the videos below.  I assume she keeps the fridge at home though.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix

phoenix

The hype-band of the moment appears to be the French quartet, Phoenix.  Their name has been popping up all over the place ever since I heard their latest single on Sirius XM Satellite last Friday.

The quirky four-piece from Versailles have been around since 1996.  Their existence is directly connected to other notable French outfits such as Air and Daft Punk, while the lead singer, Thomas Mars, is romantically tied to Sophia Coppola.  Name-dropping aside, the band writes energetic pop songs with electronic beats and infectious rhythms.  Envision a Soulwax skeleton supported by a Strokes backbone.

Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix is their fourth studio album and is scheduled for proper release on May 25/26.  To keep fans at bay, the band has made the first single available as a high quality download on their official website.  Best of luck getting it out of your head once you listen.

2008 Albums :: Year In Review

discman

My mp3 device was boosted on Christmas Day.  A sour way to end the year, no doubt.  Certainly, things could be worse.  And overall, the year was very good to me.  But in the moment, I pouted  like a little boy who had his favorite toy taken away.  Music is a lifeline to me.  It travels with me wherever I go.  In a world with instant portability and access to information, I was suddenly left in the cold without any clothes.

In the meantime, I’ve resorted to using a portable CD player on my daily walks with the dog.  The antiquated process has given me an opportunity to listen to complete albums from start to finish; something that rarely happens with an iPod when it’s all too easy to simply hit shuffle or create a playlist.  I quickly devised a list of my favorite releases of 2008 and made a point of listening to each album in full.  Sure, it wasn’t as convenient, but it definitely helped me appreciate what turned out to be a fine year in music.

This Christmas

toomuchrock.com

photo credit :: toomuchrock.com

It’s been a while since I’ve seen Elizabeth Elmore out and about.  She may be taking after another member of MiS, or perhaps I’ve just missed her.  I suppose her full-time lawyer gig keeps her busy.  Her previous bands, Sarge and the Repuation are on indefinite hiatus, so all we can hope for is the occasional solo performance.  Dave and I were lucky enough to catch her as the opening act for Josh Caterer back in 2006.  With nothing but an acoustic guitar, she ripped through a bunch of songs that served as a terrific precursor to the evening’s main event.

As Christmas quickly approaches, I share with you Sarge’s version of the holiday classic, This Christmas.  Best wishes!
